EXTRA CREDIT PHILOSOPHY OF EXTRA CREDIT

Extra credit is available in science class.

Extra credit should be only used to help supplement a student's grade in fact while I offer it I also discourage the use of it. (Figure out why?)

Extra credit will not prevent a student from failing if they have not done any or little work during the quarter.

Students who need those few extra points at the end of the quarter should use extra credit to get those needed points. Because I believe my class is so transparent and easy to figure out how to get the grade that reflects having learned the science you may have to ask me first about the extra credit.

Students may also receive extra credit on regular class assignments via the main page with the science bonus questions. This may be done on up to four assignments per quarter. The bonus question is really more for fun and most students choose a special gift for answering the question rather than the credit.
HOW?

Credit can be earned by watching any episode of Scientific American Frontiers on any PBS station. Channel Nine in St. Louis

This show airs only at selected times and periods throughout the school year, so students must actively look for broadcast times.

Students will receive extra credit when they bring in a signed note from their parent or guardian stating what episode they watched.

Students may watch up to two episodes per quarter for extra credit. The show is often not broadcast two times in a quarter so students need to plan ahead.

Students can use the sites below to check on air dates and the names of the episode.

Students can also watch Scientific American Frontiers on line if you have a computer that supports streaming video. (Students need to watch 4 of the short online segments to equal one full length hour show) A broadband connection or cable modem helps as well. If your home computer cannot support the needed speeds for video, I have plenty of computers in my room you can use any morning before school.
