I’ll Gotten Goods Science WHAT IS THIS STUFF?WHO
STOLE THE GOODS? PROCEDURE / OBJECTIVE
In this lab you will make educated guesses as to what some of the
outcomes of mixing unknown chemicals might be. You will be working with many chemicals. As, in all labs you will need to apply your
vocabulary words and do good observations in order to be able to have an idea
about what is taking place in the lab.
Remember your chemistry what - relationship do the chemicals
have? What are the beginning observations
and how do they compare to your ending observations? Keep in your mind that ending observations
give you clues to what chemicals are doing.
Keep in mind that nothing happening is also an outcome. You will be using the following chemicals in this lab: 1) Acetic
Acid - CH3CO2H 2) Sodium
Carbonate - Na2CO3 3) Phenolphthalein
– C2OH14O4 4) Magnesium
Sulfate – MgSO4 5) Universal
Indicator (unknown) 6) Dihydrogen
monoxide H2O 7) Sodium
Hydroxide - NaOH 8) Hydrochloric
Acid - HCL 9) Indigo
Carmine Follow the lab instructions from the teacher very
carefully. It is very important that
you follow very good clean procedures during this lab. Groups that do not follow directions will
find it impossible to get the proper results for this lab. ACTIVITY ONEMake general observations of
the liquids before you begin any mixing. Are the chemicals elements or
compounds? Do they have any noticeable
smell? Do they have any noticeable color? If the chemical is clear how clear is
it? Is the chemical a thick or thin
liquid? FOR THIS ACTIVITY SET UP A

ACTIVITY TWO
Follow the chart below in
order as to how to mix the chemicals. Be
sure to be ready to record your observations, your group will need to pay
careful attention to the events in the lab. 1) Chemical One + Chemical Two = Observe 6)
Chemical Seven + Chemical Nine = Observe 2) Chemical One + Chemical
Three = Observe 7) Chemical Eight + Chemical
Five = Observe 3) Chemical Three +
Chemical Two = Observe 8) Chemical Two + Chemical
Nine = Observe 4) Chemical Two + Chemical
Four = Observe 9) Chemical Seven + Chemical
Five = Observe 5) Chemical Five +
Chemical Six = Observe 10) Chemical Four + Chemical

answer the following questions in class. What chemicals seem to form
a solid? What chemicals seem to cause the other to change
colors? What chemicals seem to replace each other in the
reactions? What are the reactants and the product? |
